The Italian Food Experience: How to Make and Eat Italian Food

Italian food can be tasty as well as healthy. A number Italian food fans have been hesitant to eat this type of food because of all the pasta that is used.

Side note:(You can learn all about pasta here)

Some professionals claim you need to stay away from this food. Nothing could be further from the truth.

There are so many different types of Italian food, that it is actually quite healthy. this cuisine can keep you looking and feeling great. But you need to know what Italian food to eat and how to prepare it. I use my own grandparents as case studies in point. Their diets were rich in pasta. They each lived to a very ripe age and continued to follow the same diets.

I'm here to tell you, this ethnic food can be quite healthy.

A great example of the fact that Italian food will not make you fat is in Sophia Loren. She told the world in her book that she grew up on spaghetti and ate it constantly. She says that it is not the pasta that makes you fat; it's what you put on top of it. People who gain weight eating Italian food typically do so not because of the pasta, but because of creamy sauces like Alfredo sauce and because they eat in too large portions. Italian food from the Mediterranean doesn't rely on rich, thick sauces and uses olive oil instead of butter, making it very healthy.

It all starts with the ingredients you keep. For good, healthy Italian food you want to make sure you stock the kitchen with quality pasta, olive oil, garlic, onions, lean meat, fish, and seafood. For seasoning you will want some herbs like basil, oregano, and parsley. You'll want to stay away from a lot of cheese and perhaps only get a little parmesan cheese to top your favorite Italian food dishes. The creamy and cheesy Italian food dishes are the ones you're going to want to stay away from to keep a healthy diet.

There are several different light Italian food meals that you can prepare with these simple ingredients. Here is one to start you off, an Italian food classic, pasta with tomato sauce. You can use any type of pasta you want and you might want to try livening it up with variety. Italian food is not just spaghetti noodles. Boil the pasta in water with salt. Make sure not to overcook the pasta. You want it to be firm, yet tender. The most common mistake made in making Italian food is making mushy pasta. For the sauce simply chop up some garlic, an onion, and some tomatoes. Take a tablespoon of your quality olive oil and sauté both the garlic and onions until they are soft. Once that is done add the tomatoes and cook until all the ingredients are blended together well. To top it off add your favorite herbs such as parsley, oregano, or basil. Try different combinations of herbs, there is no definitive herbs for Italian food so experiment and give your sauce your own signature flavor.

Serve this sauce over your hot pasta and if you want put a little sprinkle of parmesan on it. This is a simple Italian food dish that stands on its own and you won't need to eat bread or anything else with it. This is a great example of how healthy Italian food is supposed to be, light and fresh.

Feel free to try different variations on this recipe. Italian food is full of a variety of pastas and recipes that can keep you satisfied and healthy as long as you stay away from the heavy sauces and creams.

Without a doubt there are many different types of incredible Italian cuisine.

Growing up in an Italian-American family (all four of my grand parents came off the boat), I was exposed to a very specific type of cuisine. The Italian food we ate was, peasant food. Very heavy on the spices but not made iwth exotic ingredients.

As I got older I discovered that there are many different tastes and flavors of Italian food. I now understand there are many types of Italian food, not just the peasant food I grew up with.

The Italians have different types of food depending on the region. I love it all and I am always making new discoveries.

Albert,
As you must know I am one of your most avid readers of all your sites. I appreciate the fact that you talk about Sophia Loren and the fact that eating the pasta doesn't make you fat but all the rich sauces does. Could you recommend a nice light sauce for ones pasta please and give us the recipe?

Hi Albert,
I was born and raised in Rhode Island during the 50's and 60's. Much of Rhode Island were predominantly Italians. With the Italians came a cuisine rich with Italian heritage. With the help of some of the locals, I've come up with a couple of cookbooks loaded with traditional Italian and other recipes. Our first cookbook can be found here: http://www.pagesintime.com/ri/recipes.html
Keep up all that you do Albert. We appreciate you!

I had some of the best pizza of my life years ago in Copenhagen. Chewy crust, buffalo mozzarella and hard-working waiters that said "beep beep" everytime they needed to get by each other. Your pizzas remind me of some great times, Albert. Keep up the good work. (And congratulations on this web-site. It looks great!)

Hi Albert, This is a beautiful website. Took me a while but I want to share with you what I think embodies Italian Food. It's all about sharing good food with the ones you love. If you cook with love you will always have a full table of loved ones there sharing it with you. My favorite go to meal is my grandmothers meatball recipe. It is pretty simple and has all the usual ingredients but it seems that everyone thinks they are the best meatballs. My neighbors six year old daughter Gracie stops by regularly to see if I have any meatballs ready for her. At any rate for a nominal investment of time you can make a batch of meatballs to feed an army and this is always a welcome meal in my house. Thanks Grandma!!!

Hi Albert, and thanks for the invite to your page.

I just wanted to point out that having Pizza often doesn't have to translate to extra pounds either. What I do to avoid adding the extra pounds is by rolling my dough thin and preparing my own sauce, which allows me to eliminate all that high-fructose-corn-syrup.

Also, by making your own sauce you can add the amount of salt that you want, for those watching their sodium intake.

Furthermore, avoid the frozen-pizza! Those are loaded with preservatives, i.e. salt

Hello Albert, just a short note to thank you for your website. It has been a great resource for my latest hobby, which of course is making pizza. I just got your book the other day and did a quick once over and cant wait to try some of the recipes. Once I try your dough recipe I will email you and let you know how it went, we have been eating so much pizza in the last couple of months I am almost getting tired of Pizza, (God Forbid) I never thought our family would feel that way since all five of us are Pizza fanatics ......but we have found that we are saving a boatload of money since our pizza takeout habit was really putting a dent in our budget, and all the kids think my pizza is better than our old favorite local pizza place, and it is really, really good pizza but they now like mine better. Needless to say it is a huge compliment since they are such pizza aficionados..... thanks again, and I will let you know how it goes, take care, Kevin
